The Bill of Lading (BOL) is one of the most important documents in the vehicle shipping process. It serves as a legal contract between the customer and the carrier, outlining the terms and conditions of the transport. It also acts as a receipt confirming that the carrier has received the vehicle in a specific condition for transport.
At pickup, the BOL is filled out by both the driver and the customer (or their representative). It includes detailed information about the vehicle, such as its make, model, VIN, and current condition—including any pre-existing damage, which is usually noted in a visual inspection section.
During delivery, the recipient uses the same BOL to verify that the vehicle was delivered in the same condition as it was picked up. If any new damage is found upon delivery, it should be noted immediately on the BOL to initiate the claims process.
At Interlane, we ensure that the Bill of Lading is handled professionally at both ends of your shipment. It protects both the customer and the carrier by providing clear documentation of the vehicle's condition and delivery status. We always advise our customers to review and retain a copy of the BOL for their records.
The BOL may also include any additional charges, service notes, and contact details for the transport company. In the event of a dispute or insurance claim, the Bill of Lading is the primary document used to assess the situation.
